Wind of Change

Wind of Change

Wind of Change
Swept and humbled
Mighty National Front
(Barisan Nasional)
Election machinery

Malaysia's Opposition
People Alliance
(Pakatan Rakyat)
Won Kuala Trengganu
Parliamentary seat
In crucial by-election
Saturday evening
(January 17,2009)

The well-orchestrated
Opposition three-party combine
Of PKR,DAP and PAS
Captured the state capital
Seat ~ Crown jewel
Of oil-rich Trengganu ~
Scenic state in northeast
Malay peninsula
Off South China Sea

Its PAS candidate
Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut(32,883 votes)
Wrestled the prized seat
In hard fought
Three-cornered contest
In Malay heartland
Defeating
Barisan's UMNO candidate
Datuk Wan Farid Wan Salleh(30,252 votes)
by 2,631 votes margin

Independent candidate
Azharuddin Mamat,
Spoiler put in to split votes,
Drew only 193 votes
Losing his deposit

There were 665 spoilt votes

Voters' turnout
Was almost 80 per cent
(79.76 per cent)

The loss of the seat
Is big blow to Barisan's effort
To win back the people's confidence

PKR de facto leader
Former Deputy Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,
Earlier beaten up
With "Black Eye" injury
By disgraced former
Inspector-General of Police
And sacked,jailed and maligned
By ruthless former Prime Minister
Tun Dr Mahathir
Mohamed for
So-called sodomy charges,
Read the victory
As people's drive for change

Malaysia's Parliament
Now seats
137 Barisan MPs,
82 Opposition MPs
And three independent MPs

The death of Barisan MP
Datuk Razali Ismail
Last month triggered
The by-election

Malaysian Chinese Association
(MCA) President
Datuk Seri Ong Tee Kiat,
Thanking Chinese voters' support
For ruling coalition,
Stressed 63 per cent to 65 per cent
Of  8,735 Chinese voters
In Kuala Trengganu
Voted for Barisan Nasional,
An increase,as against 58 per cent
To 63 per cent in March 8,2008
General Election

Ong attributed BN defeat
To swing of Malay votes
To opposition

His immediate analysis
Suggests secret ballot
Is NO LONGER SECRET!

Boxes of ballot papers
Were all labelled
To show where voters
Cast their votes
And systematically counted
Enabling instant analysis
Of each area's community support!

However,PAS President
Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang
Was magnanimous
Against such failed divide and rule
Racial play strategy,
Stressing Malaysians
Are ready for PARADIGM SHIFT
IN MALAYSIA'S POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

He reasoned
PAS WON BECAUSE LEADERS
OF DAP,PKR AND PAS
UNDER PAKATAN RAKYAT UMBRELLA
STEPPED UP CO-OPERATION
And worked hard side by side

The fall of Kuala Trengganu
Seat to the Opposition
Highlights
Wind of Change
Blowing strong
In Malaysian politics

On March 8,2008
National Front coalition government
Lost two-third majority
Control of Parliament
After Malaysia's 50 years of independence
And parliamentary democracy
History

Opposition People Alliance
For the first time
Won control of five state assemblies
In Penang,Perak,Selangor,Kedah and Kelantan

The Political Tsunami
Precipitated public demand
For Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
To resign
By his own party UMNO stalwarts

The unprecedented losses
Of seats in Parliament and State Assemblies
Were a sharp contrast
To the massive mandate
Given by Malaysian voters
In the 2004 Election
"Feel Good" Euphoria

Abdullah has bowed
To pressure to relinquish
His post to his deputy
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak
At coming UMNO general assembly
And election
In March 2009
After barely five years in office

Today he left
For first offical visit
To Gulf states ~ Bahrain
Qatar and United Arab Emirates

Yesterday's Opposition victory
Is another stinging snub
By voters

Despite the largesse
Of special funds for schools
Fishermen's aid,etc...
The trend to remove
Corruption-tainted UMNO
From power is gathering steam

It bespeaks Malaysian
Political maturity
And unity to reject
Political bribery

It signifies increasing awareness
Understanding and mass appreciation
Of good governance
Healthy accountable competitive
Two-party system
Of democracy
Where people
Have the courage
To speak up
And the choice
To change the government

Remembering the arrogance
And abuses of power
In amendments after amendments
To the Federal Constitution
Via overwhelming two-third majority
Bulldoze in Parliment and the destruction
Of the independence of the judiciary,
Decline in educational quality and standard
And cancerous corruption in civil service,
Police,Immigration,etc.
During Mahathir's rule;
One and All
Must welcome
POSITIVE CHANGE
In Malaysia's politics!
